Obituary for Shirley Anne Bartlett

Shirley Anne Bartlett passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018.

Shirley was born in Gladwin, Michigan on March 28, 1933 to Dewey and Ruth Frye. She graduated from Sexton Senior High School in 1949 and attended Michigan State University with a scholarship in music.

In her long life, Shirley lived in several states, always working and providing for her family, and being involved in the community in which she lived. Shirley worked as a book keeper, controller of several companies, and tax accountant. She most recently was a personal preparer of taxes and was dearly loved by her clients whom she thought of as family.

Shirley was a member of the Unitarian Church of Youngstown and previously the Unitarian Society of New Brunswick, New Jersey.

Throughout her life, Shirley participated in many musical endeavors. She was an accomplished flutist, having won multiple awards in school. Shirley played in various orchestras in Michigan, Virginia, and Ohio. She was a member of the New York Flute Club and the Metropolitan Opera Society. In addition to orchestral music, she appeared as a soloist on many occasions. As a volunteer, she started and directed a music program for the Mahoning County High School. She held private music and flute lessons, teaching the basic fundamentals of music through the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, as well as providing a series of knitting lessons.

Along with her love of music, she was active in many organizations that promoted the wellbeing of others. Among the lengthy list of organizations, she was a part of the Planned Parenthood Community Leadership Council of North East Ohio; Youngstown Arts and Entertainment District Association, as Treasurer and Board Member; President of the American Society of Women Accountants; and Treasurer of the Citizens’ Advisory Board of the Mahoning County Juvenile Court. Shirley donated 5 plus gallons of blood during her lifetime. Shirley was a proud, lifelong member of the Democratic Party.

Shirley leaves to honor her memory, four children and their families, Jeanne (Geoff) Nuber of Spotswood, New Jersey; Michelle (Frank) Coury of Calabash, North Carolina; John (Janice) Bartlett of Tinton Falls, New Jersey; and Yvonne (Marty) Lipinsky, of Poland, Ohio. Beside her children, she leaves 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
